Chapter 14 · The Heart and Circulation

14.2Four chambers, two circuits

Heart in coronal section: four chambers1234567
  1. 1Right atrium 右心房
  2. 2Right ventricle 右心室
  3. 3Left atrium 左心房
  4. 4Left ventricle 左心室
  7. 7Superior vena cava
Heart in coronal section: four chambers

The heart has left and right halves, separated by the septum so their blood does not mix. Each half has an upper atrium that receives blood and a lower ventricle that pumps it out.

Blood passes through the heart twice per lap. The right heart sends oxygen-poor blood from the body to the lungs (pulmonary circulation); the left heart sends oxygen-rich blood from the lungs to the body (systemic circulation).

First-aid content is always free

Know what to do when it matters

Chapter 35, “Red Flags: When to Seek Care”, is free in full: which symptoms mean calling emergency services now, and which mean going to a hospital today. Two first-aid labs are always free too — spot a stroke with the six BE FAST steps, and practise CPR compressions to a beat of 100–120 per minute.

This is a popular-science book, not medical advice, and it can't be used for diagnosis or treatment. If you feel unwell, see a doctor.
